If you are ever in or around Naples then we highly recommend trying to squeeze in a jaunt over to the gorgeous, small island of Procida! It is only a 40 minute boat trip over from the port of Naples and with a number of boats going in and out of there each day it really does make for an easy visit!
You will arrive in Marina Grande which is pretty enough but you want to follow the signs for Marina Corricella which is on the other side of the island. Don’t panic at this fact as the island is tiny and when you get high up to the panoramic terrace you will be able to see how close one side of the island is the other!! This view point is also the first spectacular glimpse that you get of the most picturesque and colourful bijou harbour we’ve seen!
There are a number of stairwells squeezed between the houses that will take you down to this beautiful village. Once by the water the colour and atmosphere is fantastic as there are no end of fish restaurants where you can sit out and take it all in. We are sure that in high season it may not be as relaxing as we found it but if you are lucky to go outside of July or August we are sure you’ll enjoy the calm and tranquil vibe after a few days in crazy Naples!
It is amazing that this island seems to have held on to it’s authentic feel and is unspoilt as all of the shops and eateries were run by laid back and friendly locals who relished the chance to serve you up the best of the catch that day! Such a lovely way to spend a day … ‘dolce fare niente’ … the often used Italian phrase meaning ‘the sweetness of doing nothing’! We couldn’t agree more and it perfectly sums up our chilled visit nicely!
If you love a colourful place as much as we do then check out our visit to another incredible Italian island that we visited in Venice’s lagoon called BURANO … it is more vibrant in colour and character than Procida if you can believe it! Take a look and enjoy!
