It was January and we hadn’t expected such amazing weather whilst in Barcelona so to make the most of such a bright and warm day we jump in a taxi and weaved our way up the very steep streets of Carmel Hill to the colourful Park Guell! This beautiful green space is free to walk around for the most part but the area where Gaudi (the celebrated Spanish architect and designer who had a unique and individual style!), had been let loose to create, you will have to pay a small fee to enter – but this will get you close up and interacting with the incredible mosaics that cover the area!
MOSAIC : a decoration on a surface made by pressing small pieces of coloured tile, glass or stone into a soft material that then hardens to make pictures or patterns / something made up of different things that together form a pattern … The masterclass of which is right here in the park as you try to settle your eyes on one piece alone just so you can take it all in!
The patchwork of broken tiles on the curving benches that look out over the city are extraordinary and you get totally lost in the twists and turns of the patterns that form such vibrant scenes all around! The park’s stone, sand, palm trees and hundreds of bright lime green parakeets – that sqwark and fly about overhead – are all reflected in the gorgeous colours of random bits of broken tiles and miscellaneous bits of pottery that all come together so inspiringly!
The view over the city below from the Gaudi terrace, where you can stop and have refreshments, are perfectly framed by the palm trees and ceramic spires that are dotted about! And once you have marvelled at every tile, swirl of colour and intricate pattern you can leave the Gaudi area and explore, climbing still higher within the tropical planting of the wider park … cool, tranquil with again more stunning views, it was a delight!
Whatever the weather it’s a park worth visiting … if you like the unexpected, love creativity, crave nature, want a different view point, search for juxtaposing landscapes, want to see something a little bit bonkers then this is the place for you … whether you spend a wonderful morning hiking up there or a lazy afternoon in one of the many hang out spots – this park has it all and we are so glad we got to experience it in all it’s glory!
