July is set to be our 4th month based here in West Worthing, Sussex, on the south coast of the UK. We are very lucky to live right on the beach front and on the few sunny days that we have had so far (typical patchy British summer weather!!) our shoreline walks and promenade cycle rides have given us so many great sights and interesting, quirky finds to capture!
Annually at this time of year, on the pebble beach near to Worthing’s stunning pier, a public art installation goes up – this year’s offering is a gem! Colourful square arches have appeared, with mirrored interiors, which trick the eye and make for some playful reflections and imaginary! A huge success engaging the public as every time we go by there are people of all ages looking, standing, interacting, giggling and discussing what they can see! Great fun!
And the colourful seafront doesn’t stop there as just off the promenade we found beautifully kept fisherman’s cottages with individually painted shutters and matching doors which are a delight! Very reminiscent of Cornwall we thought – so a surprise to find them in the backstreets of Worthing town centre which you wouldn’t exactly call pretty!
Another thing that we have really loved and appreciated since moving here is that every morning we can cross over the road and buy the freshest of fish directly from the local fishermen as they come in with their night’s catch! A real treat to meet the characters that work so hard, in trying conditions through the dark night, for us to enjoy such local delicacies!
And when they go home to recover and prepare for the next night’s fishing escapade their colourful boats, nets, driftwood and fishing paraphernalia that is left behind is of much interest and intrigue to us … as well as looking likes works of art (in our eyes!) which we just can’t help photographing time after time!
It’s hard to pick our favourite images of this Summer so far as we have taken so many photos at the beach … but there is something about these few that we have picked out here, that excited us at the time of taking them and of which shone through in the photograph too – not always the case!!
And as you may have picked up by now from our blog there is always food involved in our outings and travels – living here being no exception – as we quickly sussed out a few favourite places within walking distance. So heading along the coast towards Ferring, where you pass a row of gorgeous bungalows and cottages with long manicured gardens that stretch right onto the beach, you will come across the delicious Bluebird Cafe which is just perfect for a tasty breakfast, cheeky long lunch or a cosy coffee and cake – needless to say we have become regulars!
Curiously the love of luscious plants and beautiful bright flowers is not just for the well kept gardens around here … the dull expanse of pebble beaches are alive with colour and flora which we have never seen before in this quantity! A gorgeous juxtaposition of harsh stone against delicate flower is a combination we will never tire of!
We are hoping for better weather in this coming second part of Summer and will be back with the images that inspired us to be taken during the next couple of months! More of the glorious beach that is our home at present, no doubt, along with more unusual finds that come our way!
