When in the Puglia area of Italy and wanting to fill a morning or afternoon then walkable and interesting Monopoli could be the perfect answer! It has it all in a very simple, beautiful yet compact way!
It instantly felt friendly and welcoming – a happy place with the usual Italian charm and beauty! Grand churches shoe horned into narrow streets, old run down buildings next to highly polished boutique hotels … it was a tour of contradictions that somehow all sits perfectly together!
Being on the water too also adds that extra something – as one minute you are in a labyrinth of tiny enclosed and shaded streets then suddenly out into a wonderfully bright and open small port full of colourful boats or on the seafront and beach with gorgeous sea views!
And after a good walk around there are, as ever in Italy, numerous and delicious places to sit al fresco and eat! This very pretty town may be lesser known that its famous surrounding neighbours Bari, Alberobello, Fassano, Polignano al Mare – but we thought it was well worth a visit & a mention!
