When in France, especially around the Dordogne area it is hard not to stumble across a magnificent chateau or two! But the gardens and views of Les Jardins de Marqueyssac – which can be found specifically in the Perigord region – is worth mentioning above the others of its kind.
It has incredible and cleverly laid out rolling gardens that guide you round to each and every one of its jaw dropping panoramic view points … it is impossible not to be totally and suitably impressed!
The manicured hedges and topary are immaculately maintained by, what must be, a small army of perfectionist gardeners! Even with the weather somewhat overcast it could not dull the beauty, care, attention and precision that was evidently and continuously given to the greenery and landscaping.
Being set up high overlooking countryside that matches the garden’s beauty just added to the layer upon layer of endless greenery in every shade imaginable along with a variety of textures – divine! The views also take in two of the most striking and stunning towns in the area – both Beynac and La Roque-Gageac – along with endless winding views of the Dordogne river.
The 17th century Chateau de Marqueyssac sits regally but not imposingly over the land and we found it to be simply decorated – not over the top or ostentatious in any way – in fact it was really quite quaint and homely inside. There is a traditionally decorated cafe / restaurant with a gift shop and plenty of choice spots to sit al fresco eating and drinking whilst taking in the breath taking surroundings! A wonderful way to spend a leisurely afternoon – we can’t imagine that you wouldn’t find it anything but inspiring!
