Glacier Lagoon – an Icelandic wonder!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Don’t even feel like we really need to write any more than that about this extraordinary place! We have been lucky enough to see and experience many beautiful places – some we would even describe as spectacular – BUT the Glacier Lagoon was truly beyond.

Obviously we had seen photographs of the lagoon whilst researching for our Icelandic road trip – we knew it was a must see – but nothing can really prepare you! We were eager for our first glimpse of it but on the approach you can’t actually see the lagoon until the very last moment when you cross a bridge and then suddenly the whole lagoon is there in all of its incredible glory!! That moment was nothing short of astounding! It just looks totally unreal … extraordinarily beautiful and super exciting – we have chills just reliving it as we write – nowhere on first sight has ever had such an effect on us!

The Glacier Lagoon, actual name Jokulsarlon, is in the south east of the island and at the end of Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajokull.Β  Here the ice begins to melt and breaks away from the glacier into jewel like iceburgs of all shapes and sizes. The atmosphere, the colours, the beauty, the spectacle and theatre of the lagoon was amazing as you watch the strong underwater current taking the ice mounds out to sea! Many of the ice blocks move smoothly off into the distance but some end up ashore on the black sand beach on the other side of the bridge which is well worth a visit too.

Aptly named Diamond beach the ice pieces stranded on the black sand just shimmer like huge diamonds, jewels, precious stones – stunning! We will never feel we did this incredible natural sight any justice in our photographs or our description here … if you get the chance just go without question as it may well be the most magical thing you ever witness! It’s going to take some beating for us to top this experience that’s for sure!
