Champoluc

We have always thought that March is a busy month on the ski slopes, as you still get loads of lovely fresh snow overnight, but the days are usually sunny and mild. You see we are not hardcore skiers that will brave blizzards and ice just to get another run in … we like blue skies and warm sunny pitstops at mountain bars and restaurants! So to our sheer delight we struck absolute gold when we visited Champoluc, Italy and had scorching weather but no crowds – in fact we hardly saw a soul over the miles of wonderful wide slopes we leisurely skied upon all week – heavenly!

We stayed at the very lovely and traditionally alpine Relais des Glaciers Hotel which we not only chose because of its easy location to the ski lifts but that it also had a fabulous spa! A must have after a full day on the slopes and this hotel had a good sized spa with in and outdoor facilities – but we weren’t brave enough to venture out, we loved the warm grotto, cave like jacuzzi and chill out area underneath the hotel!

skiing in Champoluc, Italy with Seen by Solomon travel blogChampoluc is in the Monterosa region which is a vast and varied ski area for any level of skier – known as Italy’s ‘Three Valleys’ with spectacular landscapes of wooded terrain and clear views of dramatic glaciers and snowy high peaks! You really do feel on top of the world here, more so than we’ve ever felt in other resorts. We did ski, a lot, but we also made the most of the stunning deckchair clad terraces that were so inviting and picturesque it took our breath away … added to that we were in glorious Italy hence the food was so so good!

skiing in Champoluc, Italy with Seen by Solomon travel blogWe have always found booking skiing holidays a bit of a challenge as there are the added elements of transfers, ski passes, ski equipment and insurance which can seriously bump up the budget if you are not well informed! So we were thankfully when we came across Ski-2 who specialise purely, and are based in Champoluc! Easy to deal with, as they don’t have fixed holiday packages, so it is all tailored specifically to you which may sound expensive but was actually cost effective for us. For example : we opted to book our own flights so got to choose our most convenient airport, flight times and price … any other element of the trip you can sort yourselves and then they will take care of the rest!

skiing in Champoluc, Italy with Seen by Solomon travel blogSki-2 are British but based in Champoluc so have first hand knowledge with their own ski hire facilities right under the main chair lift – handy! We had lots of help in getting our ski boots fitted correctly – one of the most important factors for safety to your ankles and legs but also comfort – not to be underestimated when you are stuck at the top of a mountain with miles of skiing ahead of you before you can get the boots off again!! Also on our first morning we had a lovely English speaking guide who got us orientated, showed us the slopes and routes that suited our ski level, along with pointing out lifts and timings for us to get back to the resort at end of day – which was all priceless information and put us in good stead to explore this extraordinary ski area!

skiing in Champoluc, Italy with Seen by Solomon travel blogIf you are after lots of crazy apre-ski, bars and clubs then this is not the place for you … it is a small, friendly village with lovely restaurants and a very chilled feel with lots of atmosphere in the evening – just not the partying kind! By day there are lots of lovely walks to be had too as there are stretches of alpine forests, the Evancon river running through the valley and lots of pretty traditional buildings making for a photogenic stroll. Also worth a mention and hard to miss, when you get to the top of Colle Sarezza,  is the fantastic statue of an Ibex mountain goat standing proudly and looking out over the most stunning of panoramas.

skiing in Champoluc, Italy with Seen by Solomon travel blogWe’ve never skied over an area where it was so quiet and it was a pure pleasure! It’s always brilliant to have such choices on these types of holidays as everyday can then be different … some days you want to be a little bit scared and then overjoyed when you look back up and see the gradient of mountain you’ve just conquered! On another day you can become entranced by the easy rhythm of lazily flowing down gentle slopes and then taking a long lunch, with a heavenly view in the sunshine, on any one of the stunning terraces thereafter! Champoluc really does have it all and we will definitely be back to ski and enjoy this beautiful place again!
