WHERE ? : the stunning Scala dei Turchi can be found on the south coast of Sicily … we were staying in Agrigento which was perched on a hill top around a 20 minute drive away from this beautiful stretch of coastline. The white stone cliff has been worn away into a ‘scala’ which means steps and is set with a gorgeous sweeping bay on either side of it … soft golden sand and calm turquoise waters set the white stone cliff off rising up like a huge iceburg!
WHEN ? : we got up very early to drive to the coast to be there for sunrise and it really was worth the effort! Firstly the light at sunrise is always very special and as it lit up the cliffs the view was spectacular! Secondly, it was quiet and so peaceful! Thirdly, you can only access the ‘scala’ from the beaches below and the gate to the pathway down doesn’t open until 8am! We were the first down to the beach and onto the scala which was amazing as the scale of the white stone steps is hard to appreciate from up top – but once walking and climbing on them it is epic! TIP : definitely worth the early start to experience this place with no one else around as within an hour it was crawling with coach loads of tourists!
WHY ? : a unique place to see and experience … beautiful views all around and the beaches either side of the scala are clean, shallow calm waters and safe … there is a viewing terrace up top, just along the road a bit, which is ideal for taking in the whole panorama and a few nice beach bars and restaurants both at the top and bottom of the path making for an easy visit!
Take a look at the video we shot there with a little help from our DJI Phantom 4 drone giving you the best views from way above!
